Like other popular children’s manga magazines at the time, Ciao issues included furoku (bonus gifts) bundled with each edition. Furoku can take many forms including pre-packaged plastic toys and drawing materials, but during the 80s and 90s the most common furoku you’d receive with shoujo manga magazines were cardboard/paper goods and adhesives. During Wedding Peach‘s run in the magazine it enjoyed a decent level of popularity among readers, meaning it also received some snazzy furoku, much of which was illustrated by Yazawa Nao.
As with other Wedding Peach items, furoku from Ciao magazine in 1994 is difficult to come by and fairly expensive to obtain these days, but I am happy to share what I have in my personal collection with other fans. Ciao 1994 March — Ciao All Star Seal Set
March of ’94 marked the publication of Wedding Peach‘s first chapter in Ciao magazine and thus, the stickers contained in this set are the first official furoku Yazawa Nao’s manga ever received. The colouring and designs are a little different to the ones in later issues of the magazine so these are a great historical touchpoint for the series. Artwork by Yazawa features on the “Waku❤️Waku Pika Pika Seal” section (Wedding Peach) and the “Tokimeki Character Seal” section (Peach and Yousuke).
Ciao 1994 December — Ciao Christmas Message Mascot
These natty little cardboard hangers can be used as seasonal gift tags or put on display. The front side of each features a vibrant full-colour heroine illustration while the back features room to write a message. Yazawa-sensei contributed the art of Momoko for the Wedding Peach mascot here, with our lead looking decidedly angelic for the holiday season.
Ciao 1994 December — Ciao Christmas Message Mascot Seal
This sheet of shiny, silver stickers features the same set of heroines from the “Christmas Message Mascots” and can be used in conjunction with them or on their own. The seasonal Peach illustration here is provided by Yazawa.
Ciao 1994 December — Ciao Christmas Pop-Up Card
Colourful miniature Christmas cards that pop-out for an enhanced display. Although small and with limited room for messages, these vibrant cards highlight Ciao’s heroines nicely and the Wedding Peach girls look particularly cute in illustrations by Yazawa-sensei.
